The Wolf's Moor

Lupin Drake

Small creatures bared their sharp little fangs, hissing in a language humans had long forgotten or lost, fluttering on transparent wings. Larger beings drew out swords and staffs topped with glowing orbs.

"Fools! Murderers! You shall pay for your crimes!"

He trembled and quivered in fear, clutching at his mother's skirts. He didn't know what these creatures were, or what their words meant. He didn't even fully know what was happening, only that they were very angry and very powerful. They probably knew what was going on, and that made him fear them even more.

"It was an accident!"

"Do not lie!"

"Are we to stand your kind trespassing on our lands, lands that we have owned for centuries already? We do not trespass upon what is yours!"

"This whole land belongs to us; not only were we here first, but we helped it thrive and grow, unlike your kind who strips it bare of its trees, pollutes its water, and guts the soil of its riches and life. Thankless creatures, heartless things! Killing one of our own!"

"We did not—"

"You did and you knew and you will be cursed, taking the form of the heartless and cruel animals that you are! Forever shall you live this curse, unable to pass the gates of death until you kill an O'Connor or prove you are not animals!"

"What do you mean?"

Seamus closed his eyes as all of the unearthly beings started to glow, the smaller ones chanting, the beatings of their wings roaring in his ears until all faded.

*~*~*

Seamus shook his head to get rid of those thoughts, taking in a deep breath as the wind whipped tendrils of his hair across his face. Ah, how he loved Scottish air! There was nothing like it: cool and crisp, it was filled with the scents of sea salt and heather, promising a lovely summer. It was almost like the winds back home in Dublin, but that air always smelled a bit smoky with hints of peat bogs long dug up.

His blue motor scooter bounced a little on the uneven road, but he didn't mind at all—the road was made of dirt, so what did he expect? He was lucky that it wasn't full of rocks and when it did rain, the peat soaked up the water and prevented mud in the middle of it, and it wasn't covered in gravel like some places. He hated gravel with a passion. No matter what he did, the smaller pieces always flew up and scratched his poor scooter, sometimes getting up into the works of it from under the wheels. At least the town roads were paved, smooth cobblestone occasionally breaking up that monotony. As long as he avoided people's driveways or remained parked on the sidewalk curb, he'd be okay.

Of course, he would be enjoying the nice stretch of road he went up and down every day a little bit more if he wasn't late for an important date: his shift!

"There ye are!" his boss scolded the moment he walked through the employees' entrance.
